One thing that I never want to forget again is my own personal power.
“Personal power is the ability to stand on your own two feet with a smile on your face
in the middle of a universe that contains a million ways to crush you”
Yes the universe has a million ways to crush you, but you have a choice to not lose your core being in the process, who you truly are, your genuine self. I recently had an experience with a friend who was telling me how someone he was in connection with was always putting him in a bad mood; how he had always effected him negatively.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. in that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom” – Viktor E. Frankl
I had to allow my friend to see that it was not that other person who was always putting him in a bad mood, it was himself giving his personal power away unknowingly. We have a choice, given to us as a personal universal freedom to choose how we react when someone treats us a certain way, causing a stimulus leading to a reaction that is 100% up to us how we will react. We can choose our own way, it is our human freedom.
I had years of being a reactive person, absorbing the energies, good or bad from those around me. I had unknowingly played the victim with words such as “He” or “she” made me feel, made me do, made me react, forgetting in that paradigm that I had a personal power that I was completely neglecting. A human being is a deciding being says, Viktor Frankl. I want to use Viktor Frankl’s wisdom in this post because in the midst of a Nazi concentration camp, in the most unspeakable conditions imaginable Viktor made choices of how he would react to the hellish stimulus around him, remembering that as he discovered “The last of the human freedoms – the ability to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances.”.
Most if not all of us will never see the amount of human suffering as Frankl did but using him as a reminder that when in our daily life we are acted upon and maybe unjustly treated, we have a choice to choose how we will personally respond. Sometimes it is a hard, bitter pill to swallow to take responsibility for your emotional life, to know that if you are miserable it is you who has chosen to be miserable, but in that same breath you can realize that you can choose to not be miserable as well. When you can say to yourself openly and honestly that you are where you are today because of the choices that you made yesterday, you are reclaiming your throne of your own kingdom, your personal power is restored.
Let us stop selling our emotional lives and personal power to the lowest bidder. Let us who haven’t waken up to the fact that it is not your environment, your circumstances, your upbringing, your sibling, your enemy that is making your life the way that it is, it is us who hold the key to our lives and our sole responsibility to choose how we will respond to anything and everything that comes our way. Be very happy that you can choose how you act or feel. With practice and distancing yourself from the victim state of mind, you will know negativity will come your way, but you will be confident that you and you alone will decide how you will react to it.
“forces beyond your control can take away everything that you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation” – Viktor E. Frankl
Brothers and sisters life truly is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it. I want to restore your personal freedom today. I would like you to walk outside with your head up high knowing that your coworker can’t ruin your day anymore, that your mother in-laws visit in town is going to be pleasant, that the guy who cuts you off in traffic wont be contributing to your stress levels, that whatever life throws at you you have the personal power to choose how you will respond. I hope life brings you much peace and knowledge.
